On May 24, 1848, the children of Joseph Morrell (deceased), ensign and quartermaster from the Revolutionary War, applied for an increase in his pension. The listed children are Mary Walsh, Sarah G. Morrell, Julia Morrell, Martha Morrell, and Elizabeth Morrell, these being his only living children. In 1851, this application was renewed by Mary Walsh, widow of William Walsh. Joseph Morrell enlisted in 1775, and soon thereafter received his commission as Ensign in the 4th New York Regiment. He served in this regiment until 1780, when he became Brigade Quartermaster to the New York Brigade commanded by General James Clinton. He served until General Washington disbanded the army in 1783. He was at the defeat and capture of General Burgoyne and his army at Saratoga. He was also at the Battle of Monmouth. He was also at the capture of General Cornwallis and his army in 1781. [2]
