While residing in Atkinson, New Hampshire, John Morrill enlisted as a private in the Revolutionary War. He served between November 1776 and August 1777 in the New Hampshire Regiment commanded by Col. Pierce Long. He participated in the battle at Fort Ann. In his own words, "I am by occupation a farmer, my health poor having the Rheumatism very badly, am able to work about half of my time." Having no children with him to help him farm, "I have been confined in jail for debt several times within ten years." In 1805 he was living in Newbury, Vermont. In 1807 he moved to Landaff, New Hampshire. In 1819 he moved to Haverhill, New Hampshire. In 1831 he moved to Landaff, New Hampshire. [7]
