Walter G. Morrill earned the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery in the Civil War. "Learning that an assault was to be made upon the enemy's works by other troops, this officer voluntarily joined the storming party with about 50 men of his regiment, and by his dash and gallantry rendered effective service in the assault." [7]

Water Morrill of Williamsburg enlisted as a Sergeant on 15 July 1861 at the age of 20 in Company A, 6th Infantry Regiment Maine. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, then Captain, then Lieutenant Colonel, all in Company B, 20th Infantry Regiment Maine. He mustered out on 4 June 1865. [8]
